Instant Search shows a panel of matching products under your store’s search box as shoppers type. It searches your PureClarity product feed, corrects small typos, and matches product names, SKUs, variant names and brands. Instant Search is being rolled out store by store, for stores on the latest PureClarity script. If you don’t see Instant Search in the menu, contact support to ask for it.

Turn it on

  1. Go to Instant Search.
  2. Turn on Show instant search on your store.
  3. Click Save.
The panel starts showing on your store’s next page view.
If your theme has its own search suggestions, turn them off, or shoppers see two panels. On Shopify, open Online Store > Themes > Customize, go to your theme’s search or header settings, and turn off predictive search (the name depends on your theme).
PureClarity finds your search box automatically on Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce. If your theme uses a different search box, enter a CSS selector for it in Search box selector, such as #header-search input. The field shows the selector used when it’s blank. View all results at the bottom of the panel submits your store’s own search form with what the shopper typed, so they reach your normal search results page.

Appearance and text

The Accent colour is used for headings, links and the highlighted product. It must be dark enough to read on the white panel and its grey promotion banners. You can reword every line of text in the panel, or translate it for your store’s language. In No results message, {query} is replaced with what the shopper typed.

Merchandising

Promotions put chosen products and content first for particular searches, such as a sale banner when shoppers search for “dress”. Click Add promotion, then:
  1. Type each search term and press Enter. Capitals and accents are ignored.
  2. Choose how terms match:
    • Search contains the term: the term’s words appear together anywhere in the search. “dress” matches “red dress” but not “dresser”.
    • Search is exactly the term: the whole search is the term.
  3. Add up to 6 promoted products. They’re shown first, in the order you set, ahead of the search results.
  4. Optionally add a banner with a title, text, image and link. It’s shown above the products.
A promotion needs at least one product, or a banner title or image. When more than one promotion matches a search, the first in the list is used, so use the arrows to put the most specific promotions first. The panel can show recommended products when the shopper hasn’t typed yet, and when nothing matches their search. Products that are out of stock or excluded from recommendations aren’t recommended.

Results

The Last 28 days card shows how often the panel was shown with products, how many clicks it got on products and on banners with a link, the click rate, and the revenue from orders that followed a click.

Good to know

  • Search results come from your product feed. New products, and changes to names, brands and variants, show in the panel after your next feed. When Instant Search is first turned on, run a full feed so brand and variant names are searchable.
  • Products excluded from search aren’t shown in the matching products. Products you promote are shown even if they’re excluded from search, and recommended products follow your recommendation settings.
  • B2B stores: the panel shows your list prices, not customer group prices. If your store shows different prices to different customers, turn off Show prices.
  • Keyboard: shoppers can press the down arrow to move into the panel, the arrow keys to move between products, and Escape to close it.
  • On-site messages don’t open while the panel is open.
