What Checkout Upsell Does

Checkout Upsell shows shoppers a popup of recommended products when they click a checkout button on your cart page or cart drawer, just before they go to Shopify’s checkout. Products are chosen automatically from what’s in each shopper’s cart, so there are no rules to set up.
  • Automatic recommendations based on the products in the cart, with your best sellers filling any gaps.
  • Pinned products (optional) are shown first, as long as they’re not already in the cart.
  • Add to cart from the popup for products without options, with a quantity selector. Products with options link to their product page so shoppers can choose them.
  • Never shows products that are already in the cart, sold out, or no longer on your store.
Checkout Upsell is being rolled out to Shopify stores one by one. If you don’t see Checkout Upsell in the PureClarity menu, contact support to ask for it.

Where the Popup Shows

Shopify doesn’t let apps add content to its checkout, so the popup opens one step earlier: when a shopper clicks Check out on your cart page or in your cart drawer, or any other checkout button or link on your store. Clicking Continue to checkout in the popup carries on to checkout as normal, including any cart note or terms checkbox your theme has. The popup doesn’t show for:
  • Express checkout buttons, such as Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. These go straight to checkout.
  • Buy it now buttons on product pages.
  • Checkout buttons that are turned off, for example by your theme until a terms checkbox is ticked.
If your theme or another app checks something only when the shopper clicks Check out, such as a terms checkbox or a minimum order, the popup opens first. The shopper sees that check when they click Continue to checkout. The popup never slows down checkout. If it isn’t ready for the shopper’s cart yet, the click goes straight through to checkout.

Before You Start

The popup is part of PureClarity’s script on your theme, so PureClarity needs to be running on your store: If PureClarity is turned off for your store, the Checkout Upsell page says so, and the popup starts showing when you turn PureClarity back on.

Setting Up Checkout Upsell

  1. In PureClarity, go to Checkout Upsell.
  2. Set the Headline and, optionally, a Description.
  3. Choose the Text colour, Button colour and the Number of products to show (1 to 3). The text colour must be dark enough to read on the popup’s white background. Button text switches between black and white automatically to stay readable.
  4. Optionally, add Pinned products.
  5. Turn on Show the Checkout Upsell popup and click Save.
Saving updates your Shopify store, so the popup starts showing on the next page your shoppers load. If PureClarity can’t update your store, the page tells you. Click Save again to retry. To test it, add a product to your cart and click Check out on the cart page, then try the cart drawer too if your theme has one. Set How often to show it to Every time they go to checkout while testing, then set it back.

Adding Products from the Popup

  • Products with one variant have a quantity selector and an Add to cart button. The button shows a tick once the product is in the cart.
  • Products with options, such as sizes or colours, and products that can only be bought as a subscription, have a Choose options button that opens the product page. Product links keep the shopper’s language.
  • If a product can’t be added, the shopper is asked to view the product instead.
Products that ask the shopper for extra details on the product page, such as engraving text, are added from the popup without them, because Shopify doesn’t require those details when adding to cart. To avoid this, exclude those products from recommendations under Settings › Configuration, in Automatically Exclude Products From Recommenders.
If the shopper closes the popup after adding something, the cart page or drawer reloads to show the updated cart. Their next click on Check out goes straight to checkout. Prices are shown in the shopper’s currency, using the prices you’ve set for their market. A product with options shows its lowest price. You can reword every button and message in the popup under Button and message text, or translate them for your store’s language.

How Often It Shows

Under How often to show it, choose:
  • Once per browser session (the default).
  • At most once every so many minutes, hours or days.
  • Every time they go to checkout, which is useful for testing.

Cart Value

By default the popup shows whatever the cart is worth. To show it only for some carts, tick Only show it when the cart total is in a range and enter a minimum, a maximum or both. Enter the amounts in your store’s currency. The cart total after discounts is used, and carts in other currencies are converted to your store’s currency first.

Free Delivery

Once you’ve set your free delivery amount under Settings › Configuration, the Free delivery section of the Checkout Upsell page has two options:
  • Prioritise recommended products that reach free delivery puts the products that take the cart over your free delivery amount first, cheapest first. Pinned products keep their place.
  • Show how much more the cart needs for free delivery adds a line and progress bar above the products, such as “Add £11.50 more for free delivery”. It updates as shoppers add products from the popup. You can reword both messages. {remaining} is replaced with the amount left to spend.
The progress line only shows when PureClarity can work out your free delivery amount in the shopper’s currency. It counts the products in the cart before cart-level discounts, the same as on-site messages and segments.

Reporting

The Checkout Upsell page shows the last 28 days of:
  • Impressions - how many times the popup was shown. A popup that was prepared but never opened isn’t counted.
  • Add to cart / option clicks - how many times shoppers added a product or clicked through to choose options. Clicks show once the shopper’s visit ends, about 30 minutes after their last activity.
  • Click rate - the share of popups that got at least one click.
  • Attributed revenue - revenue from these products, using PureClarity’s standard attribution rules.

Limitations

Checkout Upsell needs PureClarity’s script on your Shopify theme. Headless storefronts and custom checkout flows that don’t use your theme’s cart page or cart drawer are not supported.
  • The popup shows before Shopify’s checkout, not inside it.
  • Discounts on upsell products are not currently supported.
  • Themes differ, so check both your cart page and cart drawer after turning it on. If the popup doesn’t open from one of them, contact support.
