On-site messages show a visitor something at a chosen moment: a free delivery bar, an offer before they leave, products picked for them, or a one-question survey. Each message measures what it adds to your sales by comparing visitors who saw it with a group who didn’t. On-site messages replace Popups. Your existing popups keep working until you replace them. See Legacy popups.

What a message is

Every message has three parts, which match the three tabs of the editor:
  • Content: how it looks (its format) and what it says, built from blocks such as text, an image, a button, a discount code or products.
  • Audience & trigger: who sees it, on which pages, when it opens and how often.
  • Measure: the holdout, and the message’s results.
Most messages start from one of the nine templates, each made for one job.

Formats

Every format has a close button, works with a keyboard and screen readers, and is fixed in place, so opening it never moves your page’s content. A popup takes focus when it opens and closes with the Esc key; the other formats leave the page usable and close with Esc once they have focus. Your theme’s styles don’t change how a message looks. Set its colours and font under Colours and font to match your store.

How messages take turns

A visitor sees at most one message at a time. When several messages could show on a page, the one highest in your list of messages goes first. Drag messages in the list to change their order. To avoid overwhelming visitors:
  • Each visitor sees at most 3 messages per visit. Change this under Messages per visit on the On-site messages page, from 1 to 10.
  • At most one popup opens per visit. Bars, slide-ins and teaser tabs don’t count toward this.
  • After a visitor closes a message, no other message opens for a minute.

Checkout

Messages never show on checkout pages, because checkout belongs to Checkout Upsell. If Checkout Upsell opens while a message is showing, the message closes. If your store requires tracking consent, messages only show to shoppers who have given it. Without consent, PureClarity can’t tell one page view from the next, so it couldn’t keep to how often a message should show or measure its results. If a shopper consents on a page, that page’s messages start straight away.

Before you start

On-site messages need version 2 of the PureClarity script on your store, and are turned on store by store. If you see “On-site messages aren’t available for this store yet”, contact support.
